There is not a single Islamic society where you can become anything you want regardless of your ethnicity or socioeconomic status. Even in a moderate Islamic country like the UAE, Indian workers are an underclass.
Good to see another Gen X-er :) I think what you said about American Exceptionalism resonates with just about everyone- recent immigrant or 'Plymouth Rocker'. You are not defined by your ancestry or socioeconomic status- not 'what you were born' but 'who you work to be'. and I don't mean just work in the sense of a job, I mean the kind of person and the life that you aspire to. I think many people forget that we are free to make choices that either further what we want to be or don't.
America is a secular nation, that is what is the good about America.
It has no official religion, but it is definitely built on a Christian foundation. That is indisputable as a matter of history.
America was the first nation to enshrine the right of the individual to his life, liberty, property and the pursuit of happiness. Those are principles of the Enlightenment.
That doesn't mean it has no Christian foundation. The First Amendment only means that the US will have no state church comparable to the Church of England. It has NEVER meant that the US will be a religion-free society. Mikey Weinstein would like you to think that was the case, but it simply is not.
You are free to believe what you wish, or not to subscribe to any religious belief, at all. That is what it means to live in a secular nation.
You are trying to rewrite the history of this nation. It is historically false to say that this nation is a purely secular nation with no religious foundation, specifically a Christian religious foundation. The two statements are not incompatible: 1) America has no "official" religion; 2) America has an unmistakably Christian religious history to it. Read the Federalist Papers, for example, to see how the Framers used a Christian understanding of human nature to construct the Constitution the way they did. See Federalist 51: "But the great security against a gradual concentration of the several powers in the same department, consists in giving to those who administer each department the necessary constitutional means and personal motives to resist encroachments of the others. The provision for defense must in this, as in all other cases, be made commensurate to the danger of attack. Ambition must be made to counteract ambition. The interest of the man must be connected with the constitutional rights of the place. It may be a reflection on human nature, that such devices should be necessary to control the abuses of government. But what is government itself, but the greatest of all reflections on human nature? If men were angels, no government would be necessary. If angels were to govern men, neither external nor internal controls on government would be necessary. In framing a government which is to be administered by men over men, the great difficulty lies in this: you must first enable the government to control the governed; and in the next place oblige it to control itself." It is impossible to read this and deny that the Founders were informed by a Christian understanding of human nature in setting up the government as they did.
That is one of the best things about America! I know many people argue that it is a Christian nation, and it's true that we have a history of having many Christians, but we were not set up as a Christian nation. Not being a Christian, that's great for me! :)

Unfortunately, this kind of self-flagellating hating of America, capitalism, freedom, and Western values is what the Democrats think of as a party. They have become very negative generally in their outlook and their expression, verbally and otherwise. The Democrats I know who attend church and synagogue services listen to hateful sermons just like what Mamdani delivered, and come out of the experience feeling very good about themselves and bad about the rest of us.

100% agree with you. As a Canadian whose elites keep telling us we are better than Americans but not as good as Europeans, I can’t help wonder what it is they think we are or should be. I know that America is the greatest country on this earth and Canada was pretty great too, but we are flailing now as these people keep trying to fix what wasn’t broken. I now want to be American and I will assimilate into your culture because I have seen the greatness of your country and I want to contribute to that.
