I'm a refugee from a Blue State. Twenty seven years ago, I was a homeless single mom in San Francisco. When my baby arrived prematurely, my "progressive" roommates - who never missed a rally for any and all kinds of "human rights"- said I could not bring the baby home from the hospital to the apartment. I was a subtenant and had no legal right to challenge them. So I walked the streets of the Tenderloin, leaking milk with my 5 pound baby crying in my arms, praying an SRO would allow us to stay and let me pay a monthly rate (The Hotel Union on Geary Street finally came through for us - I think because it was owned by a large Indian family and the old man who owned the place took pity on us).

I remember my friend Millie saying at the time (in her slow Southern drawl) "This would never happen in Alabama."

And she was right. This would never happen in Alabama.

My baby and I got the HELL out of San Francisco, and I am a happy homeowner in Texas today. I don't even have a mortgage!

The 2030 census will be a reckoning for Blue States and their hypocritical policies. If you are a working or middle class person, you cannot live a dignified life in a Blue State or a Blue city. That means Blue states will be losing House seats they may never get back. They will also be losing influence in the electoral college.

Good!

I will never forget the smug hypocrisy and lack of compassion I experienced as a working class mom among the "kind" people. The 2030 census can't come too soon for me.

Batya Ungar-Sargon's avatar

I can't believe you had to deal with that. Massive kudos to you for getting the heck out of there and becoming a homeowner!

Tomas Pajaros's avatar

careful assuming 2030 census outcomes though - if Blue controls the census, it will show what they want it to show.

.

Detroit hung onto having 1million (with all the funding perks) for 20 years till the lie just became unsustainable + Trump ran the 2020; all of a sudden Detroit was under 700,000.

.

if Blue controls the census, it will show what they want it to show.

God bless you and so glad you made it to my state!

That was a remarkably informative and intelligent interview. I particularly appreciated how you challenged him, your approach was pointed yet entirely non-confrontational. While he clearly understands the realpolitik of the current landscape, I’m not convinced he’s ready to reassess his partisan loyalties. It seems his relationship with the Democratic Party is less about policy and more akin to familial tribalism: he recognizes the flaws, but accepts them because, to him, they are simply 'family'.

Richard's avatar

Thanks. Teixieira is a real intellect although I can't figure out why he is still a Democrat. I think he is missing something about The Groups though. They are effectively the shadow government for the Democrats. Not only do they generate policies but they provide a safe haven and an income for Democrats when they are out of power. Thus Democrats are beholden to them. Republicans do the same thing but poorly. I was a paid subscriber to TLP before being run off for a harsh comment about a Labour operative that wrote a guest column.

Tomas Pajaros's avatar

they are the shadow BANK for the Democrats.

Bill Darrow's avatar

Interesting. At the front end he gave the most intelligent, credible critique of Trump that I've heard.

What says that the Democrats need to represent "the working class"? The positions of the Democrats do not align with the notion of representing working class voters. The Democratic Party is a Feminist, Socialist, Globalist, Patronage party. They represent the Elites and the Poor, and only represent the portion of the "working class" that depends on them for patronage.

Chris T's avatar

Andrew P Question do you think they 'represent' the poor or do they simply subsidize (or bribe) them for votes? Can you detail.

Andrew P's avatar

It is a form of patronage. They provide welfare benefits and full employment for Black Women (DEI) in exchange for votes.

R H's avatar

The poor and illegal immigrants. Or whoever else gets free stuff from the government (NGO's).

Raised as JFK Democrat by a family of Democrats it never occurred to me to change sides, until just before 9/11. I had been an officer in my local Manhattan club, the proverbial 'grass roots', you know, the people who do the petitioning to get candidates on the ballot and show up early for the monthly meetings. At the last meeting I attended the regional leader showed up to announce that HRC was our candidate for the open seat at the Senate. There was no discussion, no debate, no choice. It was an order, it had been decided. I spoke up, asked how the decision was made, why and by who? How is it that we hadn't been invited to participate in the selection process. I spoke for a minute or two, and politely ignored. No democracy at Park River Independent Democrats, only marching orders issued by the higher ups. That was an eye-opener. Next thing, 9/11. The higher ups sent us a letter telling us not to be angry, how anger doesn't solve anything, i.e., deny our humanity. Don't be angry, be obedient. That was it. I sent back the letter after hand writing on it that I was angry, and I was out. Out. Never looked back either.

NY is such a large state it never made sense to me that the best candidate the Dems could find for Our State was an out-of-stater, a carpetbagger.

ri's avatar

That's a point I brought up too. She wasn't even a New Yorker. Made no difference, not even responded to.

Good interview with a smart and insightful guy, but I was startled that he thinks there’s “no doubt” that Democrats will do well in the midterms. I think they are headed for an historic defeat. Congressional Democrats are widely unpopular already, and I’m certain that DOJ will indict numerous Democrats for fraud and related crimes. A platform of hating Trump, vague promises of “affordability” from the party of high taxes and more regulations, racial quotas, gender insanity, and protecting criminals (illegal and otherwise) isn’t going to cut it in November.

Andrew P's avatar

It all comes down to turnout, as Midterms always do. Can Trump get his supporters to show up? The Democrats will certainly show up because TDS is a very effective turnout strategy.

PapayaSF's avatar

I expect a large GOP turnout effort partly based on the Democrat fraud issue.

Andrew P's avatar

That won't be enough. We need far more.

PapayaSF's avatar

There will be more, too.

C. Tarquinn's avatar

What Democrat fraud issue is that?

PapayaSF's avatar

Daycare fraud, autism fraud, hospice fraud, Medicare fraud, ActBlue fraud, election fraud.

Foosball's avatar

That is exactly correct, ,and I still cannot understand for the life of me why President Trump keeps making unforced errors over and over and over again.

There’s just no need, he’s the president of the United States. Why in the world would he give these ankle biters ammunition?

Even a good Zinger here and there I’m ok with, but it is beyond infuriating for the simple fact that our country is on the line.

The one point I’d like to make is that he certainly accomplished his goal of re-making the GOP into the popular party, especially the working man.

I distinctly remember bush 43 and his absolute idiotic comment about his pole numbers being in the low 20s because he was a buffoon who invaded Iraq.

I believe his exact quote when asked if he was concerned about his low poll numbers would be a dragon to the upcoming congressional elections

And he just shrugged his shoulders and said he will be long gone by then, and he was not concerned at all for any of the Candidate’s in the GOP.

That buffoon was the biggest reason that Barack Obama became president.

And with that Cavalier attitude, he unleashed Obama to completely try to destroy every aspect of our republic, and he did an untold amount of damage which we are still dealing with since 2004 when even a frog could’ve won a presidential election after Bush 43 served out his term.

I will never forgive which 43 for that. All I’m asking is that President Trump start through at a minimum stop with the midnight postings were for whatever reason he loses his ever loving mind.

I just wish he would keep his eye on 2028 in which a Vance /Rubio ticket would be almost unstoppable.

Let’s hope somebody takes his phone away before any more serious damage is done.

C. Tarquinn's avatar

It's simple: He is stupid, stuck at the maturity level of an 11-year-old, and probably clinically insane too.

Foosball's avatar

He certainly cannot control his big mouth

B Smith's avatar

From your lips to G-d’s ears.

PapayaSF's avatar

Trump and his team have every motivation to win the midterms, and plenty of resources to do so.

C. Tarquinn's avatar

There are plenty of things for a normal person to dislike about the Ds, but in the current climate, the Rs are just downright crazy. That whole calculus will change once we have seen the back of Trump.

PapayaSF's avatar

What makes Republicans “downright crazy”? Enforcing immigration law? Wanting criminals locked up? Refusing to sterilize children? Cracking down on billions in fraud? Seems to me the Democrats are the crazy ones.

Andrew P's avatar

You only think they are crazy because that is what the Media tells you. Remember, the Media is all-in for Feminism and all forms of Leftism. And the Media now totally depend on the Democrat political machine for their very survival. You heard the story of why Liberal Patriot had to close its doors. Nobody was buying what they were selling.

C. Tarquinn's avatar

I think they are crazy, because I know many of these people. They are my neighbors. They are nice people in many ways, but not very bright, and they believe everything they see on Fox or read on the internet. It's a cult.

Andrew P's avatar

Lots of Democrats believe everything they see on their websites and every conspiracy theory that sounds right too. That isn't a purely partisan problem. Each side has their hucksters and conspiracy theorists.

C. Tarquinn's avatar

It's a matter of degree. I don't know any Democrats who believed Haitians were eating dogs or ICE killed two "terrorists" in Minnesota. On the other hand, when confronted with Biden's incapacity, almost all Ds moved to pressure him out. And they were furious that it had been hidden from them. When are you prepared to do that with your guy - who was about to blow up a civilization?

B Smith's avatar

No, they just have different values- freedom of speech, of religion, a country defined by borders, legitimacy of Israel, nationalism over globalism, etc. They’re not crazy, they’re just Constitutionalists.

C. Tarquinn's avatar

They are NOT Constitutionalists. MAGA as a movement is an insult to our founding fathers. "A republic, if you can keep it", said Franklin. Not since the Confederacy has that proposition been more tested.

B Smith's avatar

We can agree about the existential threat. But the challenge is to avoid a republic of the USSR sort.

Jackson74's avatar

I am sorry he closed. I think he had a voice worth listening to (not agreeing with, but listening to) by both parties.

Andrew P's avatar

Nobody was paying for what he was selling. His page was a good read, linked by many aggregators, and I read it often. But not enough were paying for it to keep the lights on. There is no market for Democrats appealing to the white working class. He is living in the nostalgia of yesteryear when The Working Class was the D base. Dem politicians might try to fake it when they feel they need a few White Working Class votes, but it is always fake (like Spanberger campaigning on Affordability, or Walz pretending to be a hunter).

It is very telling that the "Climate issues" were the dealbreaker for his sponsors. In reality, "Climate" is the issue that ties the whole Democrat program together, and makes all its disparate positions and groups fit together into a logically coherent whole. "Climate" isn't really about the Climate per-se, but is about the notion that there are too many humans on the Earth - that population exceeds the planet's carrying capacity. Feminism is all about women not having babies. Migration is necessary because US white women don't have enough babies to sustain US economic growth, and growth is needed for political power. Trannies don't reproduce, so they are favored constituents of the Democrats. Lots of Elites have talked for decades about the need to get global population down below 1 billion. Patronage is necessary for political power, and DEI is simply a full employment program for Black Women, who are the D's best and most loyal voters. The D's don't value nationhood, but see the whole world as rightfully a single nation, so globalization comes naturally to them. If you think about things this way, everything makes sense.

Reading Ruy's article on The Liberal Patriot was my secret weapon during the 2024 campaign when it came to arguing with my co-called friends...The comments to his posts were goldmines of what ever happening in the field at the time especially when it came to number of newly registered voters by Republicans...

AZGal55's avatar

I think Ruy fails to adequately credit or blame the level of resistance campaign launched by the Democrats against Trumps agenda. When did Republicans ever hire "protesters" to show up at deportation raids or to hold No Kings rallies. Obama and Bidens presidencys represented many more violations against Americans civil rights. This was evident especially during covid mandates. When did Republicans launch entire propaganda campaigns supported by the media against Obama or Biden? Could Trumps messaging been better? yes. would the left have listened? I doubt it. I also dont think Rut understands that Trump is bringing up back to the American economic system vs the failed Globalist one. if i heard Ruy right was he saying that DOGE and deportations of illegals should not have been a major focus? So removing criminals and eliminating mass fraud isnt important? OK then. All Democrats have are anti Trump resistance tactics. They have no solutions, no successes. zip.

My working class family members acknowledge the excesses of the progressive left but have TDS and vote Democrat. The psychology of people whose policy preferences are closer to MAGA but vote Democrat is perplexing. I try to understand it but don’t yet. People like my mom, step-dad, and brothers (all union men) still identify with the Democratic Party as more intelligent, ethical, and distributive, while they sneer at Republicans as stupid, evil, and greedy.

Instead, I think both parties have dumb and smart, good and bad people, but I think the left’s policies are more harmful than even the worst Republican policies. The people the left hates are the people I love and respect - cops, men, athletes, Jews/Israelis, conservatives, etc. I don’t think being Democrats makes them bad people, but my leftist family members treat me like I am radioactive, a “bad person,” for rejecting their politics.

B Smith's avatar

Great mystery. Even greater, the Jews who keep voting Dem.

Lincoln's avatar

I am a fan of Ruy also, Batya, ann yourself. I really loved seeing you ask if, given everything we know, Ruy wanted democrats to win. Very disappointed in his answer. We KNOW what democrats in power will mean. The same people who ran Joe Biden will be back. Wide open borders. Transgender extremism. Full on Green New Deal policies. Bans of gas stoves, for god’s sake. In this way Ruy epitomizes the “how can you keep voting for these people?” person that absolutely baffles me.

ChiyoChan's avatar

Why the Liberal patriot failed it become a bashing site against the Democrats with moderates who claim they are liberal still. They went to the middle and guess what that middle does not exist.

Treeamigo's avatar

It failed because the person funding it pulled the plug, realizing that the Dems had learned nothing and the progressives are in charge fo 2026 and 2028..

They think hating Trump is enough.

The right opinions are more important than sensible, effective policies.

ChiyoChan's avatar

Or the fact being in the middle is a money loser. They were losing money just like CBS is currently losing money. Being centrism gets you nothing but hate from both sides.

Andrew P's avatar

It failed because the Democrats do not represent the White Working Class, and probably never will again.

They do represent non-whites, including the non-white working class, but that is simply a matter of patronage.

ChiyoChan's avatar

It failed because representing the middle gets your fuck all money. You will be accepted by either side unless you turn on the other side completely.

Andrew P's avatar

There really is almost no middle, and those who are "middle" don't care about politics.

ChiyoChan's avatar

So why bother trying to be in the middle like Ruy tried there isnt money or allies.

Foosball's avatar
