The Democrats Now Say They Support a Strong Border and Deporting Criminals—Just Not Like That. Don't Believe Them.
The mantra isn't "Reform ICE." It's "Abolish ICE."
Former Democratic Presidents would like you to know that the Trump administration’s deportation agenda is a threat to our nation. That’s how former President Barack Obama put it in a statement published this week:
“The killing of Alex Pretti is a heartbreaking tragedy. It should also be a wake-up call to every American, regardless of party, that many of our core values as a nation are increasingly under assault.
Federal law enforcement and immigration agents have a tough job. But Americans expect them to carry out their duties in a lawful, accountable way, and to work with, rather than against, state and local officials to ensure public safety.”
It’s absolutely astonishing that President Obama is blaming ICE for working against local law enforcement when it is the stonewalling of ICE by local officials that led to both Renee Good and Alex Pretti’s tragic deaths. Were ICE allowed to pick up criminal illegal migrants from local jails, they wouldn’t have to go get them in the streets, where they have been consistently impeded by an organized network of activists. Sanctuary Cities are notorious for not honoring ICE detainers, which is how you end up with roving ICE patrols in Minneapolis.
Obama proceeded to link to an article entitled “How to help the resistance to ICE in Minnesota — and beyond.” That’s right: President Obama who likes to self-righteously hold himself up as above what he calls the “divisiveness” of the Trump era is encouraging Americans to “resist” federal law enforcement carrying out the mandate given to them by the American people.
After all, deporting illegal aliens is what the majority of Americans voted for in the last election. It’s literally why Trump won—and why he won the popular vote. But when those Americans—the deplorables, the people Obama once accused of “clinging to their Bibles and their guns”—when they get what they want in an election, it’s not democracy; it’s an “assault” on our nation that poses a “threat to the basic freedoms of every American.”
It’s doubly ironic coming from President Obama, known in his day as “the Deporter in Chief.” Of course, Obama didn’t have to worry about violent protestors opposing his immigration raids; the Left never bothered when it was their guy doing it.
President Obama and other Democrats claim this is about Alex Pretti and Renee Good. They claim it’s not about deportations but about how ICE is going about those deportations. They claim to support enforcing our laws and deporting criminals, even to support closing the border. They just don’t support it like that.
Tell that to the Abolish ICE faction, which is back out in full force. As with the “Defund the Police” movement, the demand isn’t “Reform ICE”—it’s “Abolish ICE.” On Friday’s Day of Protest against ICE, I didn’t see any signs that read, “ICE Nicer.” The signs said “ICE Out.”
How exactly do they imagine the deportations of criminals should happen without ICE? Do they think you can nicely ask a criminal to leave your country, the greatest, richest country on earth, and they will just comply? The administration is literally paying people thousands of dollars to self deport, and millions have. Those who have turned down the offer apparently really want to stay.
So what’s the Democrats’ plan for getting them to leave?
They don’t have one—because they don’t actually have a problem with those criminals being here.
Consider the Democrats’ current demands before they are willing to fund the Department of Homeland Security: They apparently want ICE to acquire a warrant from a judge for every deportation (!) and they want ICE to take off their masks and identify themselves to the general public—a public that calls them Nazis every day, doxxes them, and storms their churches, traumatizing children.
These demands would quite simply be an end to the President’s deportation agenda.
And that’s the point.
The Left isn’t looking for a better ICE with more orderly deportations. They are looking for a way to stop the deportations from happening.
Needless to say, you don’t call people “the Gestapo,” as Democrat after Democrat has done, when your only problem is with how they are enforcing what you consider to be a legitimate goal.
In truth, the Democrats don’t believe in any kind of immigration enforcement. They don’t believe in any deportations. They are glad the border is closed only because it hides the fact that they had no problem with it being open.
To prove the point, President Joe Biden himself—the guy who literally opened the border and stopped enforcing any immigration laws at all—had some thoughts this week. He wrote on Twitter, “What has unfolded in Minneapolis this past month betrays our most basic values as Americans. We are not a nation that guns down our citizens in the street.” Of course, no mention is made of the fact that Renee Good and Alex Pretti died impeding law enforcement. They were not gunned down in the streets.
President Biden weighing in tells you everything you need to know about the Democrats’ current position when it comes to immigration: The same people who for four years denied and then defended a completely open border are now lecturing us about exactly how one may go about deporting the very criminals they opened the doors to.
