LOVED this!.... Embare'assed ta say that I only knew Asser Levy as bein' eponymous with the L.E.S. swimmin' pool! (a good one at that) I had no clue what an important figger he was in NY Jooish history--grateful!

The city had an anti-Semitic leader then, as now.

Despite being a virulent anti-Semite, Peter Stuyvesant was celebrated in the Kurt Weill/Maxwell Anderson musical "Knickerbocker Holiday," in which he was played originally by Walter Huston (all men of the left), and of course his name was used for Stuyvesant Town on Manhattan's east side, the huge development of mostly rent-stabalized and "affordable housing."
