Gavin Newsom Just Tried to Relate to Black People by Telling Them That He, Too, Is Stupid
White progressives mask their racism in an aura of self-righteousness, but a Yale study from 2018 exposed how systemic it really is.
California Governor Gavin Newsom may have just slaughtered his presidential aspirations. Viewed by many not just as a presidential hopeful but the clear frontrunner of the Democratic pack for the 2028 nomination, Newsom told a Black crowd at a book launch event in Atlanta on Sunday night that he is just like them—because he, too, has low SAT scores can’t read.
Yes, really:
“I’m not trying to impress you,” said Newsom. “I’m just trying to impress upon you I’m like you. I’m no better than you. I’m a 960 SAT guy. And I’m not trying to offend anyone, tryna act all there if you got 940. Literally a 960 SAT guy. You’ve never seen me read a speech because I cannot read a speech.”
That’s Gavin Newsom’s appeal to Black people: I’m stupid like you, illiterate like you, low IQ like you, never learned to read like you.
As Nicki Minaj pointed out, you can see him noticeably slowing down his speech.
It’s disgusting. But it is not unique to Newsom, though he did make it uniquely obvious. It’s something many white liberals do—but not white conservatives.
You may relate to that intuitively, but it’s not just anecdotal; there’s literally data backing this up.
It’s what a 2018 Yale study found: There is a difference between how white liberals and white conservatives talk when they talk to Black people. And that difference is this: When white liberals talk to Black people, they do something called “presenting lower competence.” They literally dumb down their vocabulary, using fewer syllable words than they do when they talk to white people. And white conservatives don’t do this.
“A new study suggests that white Americans who hold liberal socio-political views use language that makes them appear less competent in an effort to get along with racial minorities,” the study found. “According to new research by Cydney Dupree, assistant professor of organizational behavior at Yale SOM, white liberals tend to downplay their own verbal competence in exchanges with racial minorities, compared to how other white Americans act in such exchanges.”
Researchers found that Democratic candidates use fewer multi-syllable words in speeches delivered to minority audiences than they use in speeches delivered to white audiences—whereas the difference wasn’t statistically significant in speeches by Republican candidates. The pattern held over decades of speeches that the researches studied.
Hilariously, they found that you have to literally tell a white progressive that a Black person is very smart ahead of time to get them to cut this out: “Initial data from follow-up studies suggest that describing a black person as highly intelligent, thus reversing the stereotype, or as already highly motivated to get along with whites, thus removing the need to prove goodwill, can reduce the likelihood that a white person will downplay their competence in their interactions with the black person.”
The study proved not just that individual white progressives are racist, but that there is a system-wide failure to view Blacks as equals that is endemic to the progressive movement. Their entire woke worldview, which posits that minorities are oppressed and therein lies their virtue, is in essence racism disguised (from themselves as well as others) in an aura of self-righteousness. After all, what could be more racist than the patronizing view that Black people need to be protected from our big vocabularies?
And yet progressives think this makes them better than the Right, who they routinely smear as racist.
Newsom didn’t just display his own bigotry of low expectations. He literally called Black people stupid. I guess he really isn’t smart enough to do the usual progressive gambit of hiding his insulting views in a self-righteous aura of beneficence as the smarter progressives are wont to do.
Reading about this study had a profound impact on me when I first discovered it. It was a big part of how I began the slow process of unspooling my Trump Derangement Syndrome. I talked about it on my show a few months ago.
I remember calling up a close friend who’s Black to tell her about the study.
“Did you know white progressives dumb down their vocabulary when they talk to Black people?!”
She laughed.
“Yeah, of course, everyone knows that.”

The soft bigotry of low expectations. Affirmative action, DEI, CRT, et etc. But Newscum just literally said the quiet part out loud as just pointed out, “look I’m just as stupid as you, I can’t read and have low SAT scores. So all you “stupid minorities” have a kindred spirit, vote for me, I’m just like you! Even the “stupid minorities” should be righteously outraged.
